Scar Bank House was built in 1925 by the architect Morley Horder for Archibald George Blomfield Russell (1879 - 1955) entomologist and connoisseur, and his wife, Janet. Russell was an art dealer and officer at the College of Arms, London. He became a close friend of the painter Paul Nash who lived in Swanage in 1935 and photographed Scar Bank. Both were interested in moths and built a lightbox on the flat roof of the house which is featured in the Nash painting: "Ballard from Scar Bank 1937.
