School Board Offices, Chapel Street, Salford
The ceremony of laying the memorial stones of the new School Board Offices and the Central Higher Grade School which are in course of erection in Chapel Street and Victor Street, Salford, took place yesterday afternoon. The offices are expected to cost £12,000 exclusive of furnishing; and the school which stands behind the offices will probably cost £11,000, exclusive of fittings. Both buildings are being erected from the designs of Messrs Woodhouse and Willoughby, architects of this city. The basement of the School Board offices was devoted to the attendance work, - the endeavour to get the children in all the schools in the borough to attend regularly. The ground floor accommodated on the west side of the entrance the clerk to the Board and his staff; on the east side was to be the office of the organising master for the Board’s own schools and the new organising mistress for the kindergarten work. The first floor was to be devoted to the Board, its committees and members, while above was a large conference or examination hall with suitable adjuncts. Externally, the base of the building was of dark granite and the upper part tan terra cotta, the colour selected by the architects. [Manchester Guardian 13 September 1894 page 7]
