ACCRINGTON - New schools, recently added to the New Jerusalem Church, Accrington, were opened on Saturday. They are Late Gothic in style, and occupy the site of the old school and that of seven houses adjoining. Accommodation is provided on the ground floor for 304 girls, 176 infants, and 72 babies, with cloak-rooms, lavatories, and tea-making room. On the first floor there is an assembly. room, accommodating 800 persons, and approached by stone staircases from two streets. here is also a lecture-hall, seated for 260 per sons, committee-room, and ante-rooms. The chief front is faced with Haslingden grit par points with Yorkshire stone dressings. The floors throughout are of concrete and wood block flooring. The heating of the rooms is by hot water on the low-pressure system; the ventilation is to be by means of a 48in. Black man air-propeller, driven by one of Crossley's “Otto” gas-engines. The works have been carried out by the following contractors: — Excavating, masonry, and brickwork, Messrs. W. Ramsbottom and Sons; joiner, Mr. Wm. Roberts; slater, Mr. James Whitehead; plumbing and glazing, Messrs. Carter and Son; iron work, Mr. J. W. Bridge—all of Accrington; concrete and wood-block floors, Messrs. Hindley and Wood, of Manchester; heating, Messrs. Musgrave and Co., of Belfast. Mr. W. H. Dixon has acted as clerk of works. Messrs. Stones and Gradwell, MM.S.A., of Blackburn and Accrington, are the architects. [Building News 21 January 1887 page 101]
