MANCHESTER - The Fallowfield new schools have been inaugurated. The schools are located on a site in Portland-grove and form an unpretentious building, the style of which is, in the main, Gothic. The interior measurements of the school-room are 55 feet by 28 feet. The ground floor is divided into six class-rooms, of which the two central rooms, one on each side of the main corridor are the larger, being 21 feet by 16 feet, and the others respectively 18 feet 6 inches by 12 feet and 16 feet by 9 feet. A partition divides the upper floor into two large school-rooms with separate entrances, one for boys and the other for girls; but the partition will be easily removable, so as to convert the floor into a hall occupying the full extent of the building. It is estimated that good accommodation will be provided in the schools for 300 scholars. The architect is Mr Ernest Bates and the cost of the building is said to be about  £1,000 [Builder 5 March 1870 Page 192]

FALLOWFIELD SCHOOLS - The new schools which have been established at Fallowfield and which are intended to be under Government inspection were inaugurated last evening by a public soiree. The schools will be conducted on unsectarian principles, and the subjects of instruction are to include reading, writing, English grammar and composition, geography, history, arithmetic, the elements of natural science, drawing, etc. The building which stands on a good site in Portland Grove is Gothic in its main features. The hall will be available for public meetings and entertainments. It is estimated that good accommodation will be provided in the schools for 300 scholars. Mr Ernest Bates was the architect. The cost of the building is stated at about £1,000. [Manchester Guardian 20 January 1870 page 5]
