WELSH BAPTIST CHAPEL FOR KIRKDALE - The memorial stone of a new Welsh Baptist chapel about to be erected in Kirkdale, was laid on Wednesday by Mr John Houghton. The estimated cost of the building is £2,500, and towards this £1,850 has been contributed, Mr Houghton giving £240. On the occasion of the laying of the stone, Mr Houghton was presented with a handsome trowel, and several addresses in Welsh and English were delivered. In the evening a tea meeting took place in the schoolroom underneath the Congregational Chapel, Great Mersey-street, the Rev. John Evans presiding. In the new building sitting accommodation will he provided for 450 persons, and by throwing open sliding doors between it and the schoolroom 200 more cin be accommodated on special occasions. The estimated cost of the building is £2,500, and towards this £850 has been contributed, Mr Houghton giving £240. On the occasion of the laying of the stone, Mr Houghton was presented with a handsome trowel, and several addresses in Welsh and English were delivered. In the body and galleries of the chapel sitting accommodation will be provided for 450 persons, and by throwing open sliding doors between it and the school-room 200 more can be accommodated on special occasions. All the pews and other internal fittings will be pitch pine. The pulpit will be a rostrum, with a baptistry of neat design, surrounded with elaborate altar rails. The style of the building will be a very simple Romanesque. The contract price is £1,600, and it is expected that the building will be completed in nine months from the present time.
