South Transept and Chancel. St Clement’s Church. Chorlton-cum-Hardy
A church had been established on this site in 1573 and was rebuilt in 1782. New church consecrated 29 April 1876 (Wyke) although Pevsner gives date as 1861-66. South transept and chancel were added by W & S Higginbottom in 1895-6. According to the Guardian report the new transept was designed to replicate the north transept, built some years previously. The new south transept was designed to provide accommodation for over 100 people at an approximate cost of £1,500.
CHURCH EXTENSION AT CHORLTON-CUM-HARDY, LANCASHIRE - On the 20th inst. the corner-stone of the new south transept of St. Clement's Church, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, was laid. The church itself, which replaced a very ancient structure, was built some thirty-five years ago. A north transept was afterwards added, and the addition is a replica of it. It will provide accommodation for something over 100 worshippers and will cost to complete about £1,500. Mr. W. Higginbottom (Messrs. W. & G. Higginbottom, Manchester) was the architect.
