OPENING OF THE NEW ROMAN CATHOLIC DAY AND SUNDAY SCHOOLS OF ST CHAD’S. A plot of land was selected for the site of the new schools, which is almost at the rear of the church, adjoining the residence of the officiating priests, in Stock Street, Cheetham, and on 5th May last the first stone was laid without ceremony. The architects of the new building were Messrs Nicholson of Princess street; the joiner and builder, Mr Penk; and Mr Richard Knowles the mason. It is a most substantial building, is in a pure Gothic style of brick, with a frontage of stone, and is two storeys high. It consists of two large rooms with ante-rooms etc.. The large room on the ground floor is intended as a day and Sunday school for boys and the upper room for girls, access to which is gained by flights of stone steps in the interior of the building. The latter is a noble room, well lighted by large and lofty windows; it has an open timbered roof of oak, and on the same floor is a classroom. The building altogether will afford accommodation for upwards of 1,000 children, is fitted up with gas, and has cost £1,200 in erection.
