The new Congregational Church of St. George, Thornton Hough, built at the cost of Mr W H Lever MP, was formally opened for worship on May 30. The church is built of Runcorn stone, and is Norman in style. It is cruciform, and has at the crossing a broad central tower. The internal fittings are executed in English oak and the pulpit, font, and Communion-table are of Storeton stone. There is a plaster barrel vault and the building is roofed with Yorkshire flags. Mr J L Simpson was the architect, and Messrs Smith Brothers Limited, were the contractor. [Building News 7 June 1907 p 787]
