A new church dedicated to St James the Apostle is being erected at Gatley-in-Etchells, near Stockport. The church is situated at the east end of Gatley Green. It is of early Gothic design and consists of a nave, an octagonally shaped baptistry and chancel terminating apsidally, upon the south side of which will be the organ chamber and vestry. The walls externally and internally are faced with brick of a greyish colour, with dressings of stone and stock bricks. The church will be provided with 200 sittings, but provision has been made in the design for enlargement by constructing a future south aisle. [British Architect 31 December 1880 Page 288]

NEW CHURCH AT GATLEY-IN-ETCHELLS – The new church of St James the Apostle at Gatley-in-Etchells, near Stockport, is now fast approaching completion, and is expected to be consecrated by the Bishop of Chester on St James’s Day, 25th July. The structure, which is of early Gothic design, from the drawings of Messrs Medland and Henry Taylor, architects, of this city, consists of a nave, the western end of which, being narrowed, forms a kind of narthex an octagonal shaped baptistery, and chancel with the organ chamber and vestry on the south side. Provision has been made for 250 sittings, all of which are free and unappropriated; this number, however, will be materially increased by the proposed addition of a south aisle. Since the original plans were drawn the inhabitants have determined upon the addition of a tower to the building, which is now in course of erection. The cost of the structure is between £2,000 and £3,000. [Manchester Guardian 26 May 1881 page 8]
