NEWCHURCH IN PENDLE - On Saturday last, Major Starkie laid the foundation stone of a church school at Newchurch-in-Pendle. The new school will be a mixed one, and will have a conscience clause, so that those those who have an objection their children being taught the Church catechism can have them taught in another room on purely secular subjects. The new school will afford accommodation for some 180 scholars, There will be one large room 45 feet by 20 feet, with two class-rooms, one 18 feet by 15 feet, and another 16 feet by 15 feet. There will be a separate entrance for the boys and girls, and a lavatory. The building will be in the early English style of architecture, and more substantial than ornate. Mr. Lord, of Manchester, is the architect, and the following are the contractors:—joiners' work, Mr. Elliott, Nelson; plumbers' work, Mr. West, Burnley; slaters' work, Stanworth, Burnley.  The plate which covered the cavity bore the following inscription:—

"The foundation stone of St. Mary's Parochial School, Newchurch-in- Pendle, near Burnley, was laid on September 19th, 1874, being the 38th year of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, by Major Le Gendre Nicholas Starkie, of Huntroyde; vicar, the Rev.
