St. Stephen's Church, Daisyfield, (Little Harwood,) Blackburn (Architectural Competition)
The designs of Mr. J. B. Thornley of Darwen, have been selected for St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Daisyfield. Several local architects also competed. The new church will be built in the Gothic style, in which Mr. Thornley occupies a prominent place in the profession in this part of the country. The designs provide seating accommodation for 500 worshippers, and the building will be erected at a cost of £4,000 Subsequently, when the tower is completed, another £2,000 will probably be expended. The fabric is to be of Yorkshire stone, and ventilation and lighting arrangements will be on the most up-to-date principles. [Darwen News - Saturday 4 March 1905 page 4]
Although J B Thornley won the competition he does not appear to have received to commission for the building of church in 1906-1908. Reasons for this are unknown, See also Cheers and Smith who were named as the architects in 1906-1908. The district was generally referred to as Daisyfield until about 1905 but later given as Little Harwood.
