ST STEPHEN’S PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS, SALFORD - On Monday, Mr Oliver Heywood, of Manchester, laid the corner stone of new school buildings, which are being erected in connection with St. Stephen’s, Salford. The site selected is that portion of the churchyard fronting St Stephen’s Street which has not been used, for burial purposes. The old parish schools in Lamb Lane have long been found too small to comfortably accommodate the number of children in attendance. The new schools are designed for 600 children; they will be two storeys in height, the upper storey for the boys, the lower for the girls, ad each schoolroom will be provided with a separate entrance. The interior dimensions of the school will be 60 feet by 30 feet, with two classrooms in each. The first floor will be raised 7 feet from the level of the street, so as to provide covered playgrounds, underneath the building. A simple treatment of Gothic is the style of architecture adopted, the material used being brick, with stone dressing, and moulded brick bands. Mr Henry Lord, of John Dalton Street Manchester, in the architect; and the contractor is Mr Alderman Brown, of Cleminson Street, Salford. The total coat in estimated at £3,000.
