Yesterday, operations for the erection of a new Catholic Church at Irlam were commenced on the site at the corner of Astley Street and Liverpool Road. The contract has been awarded Mr. William Garner, a local contractor, who has to push the work through by November next. The foundation stone will be laid in the course of about three or four weeks. The price is £2,350, but this does not include the pews flooring, gas fittings, or heating apparatus. Under the will of the late Miss Belinda de Trafford £2,500 was left towards the cost, but this will have to be supplemented by subscriptions, as not less than £3,000 will cover the building when completed. It is to be 80 feet by30 feet, with a seating capacity of over 300, and it will be built of grey headers and terra-cotta, with a tower  and belfry. Mr. Oswald Hill, Manchester, is the architect. In the chancel there will be three altars and a reredos of carved oak, representing " Calvary." [Manchester Evening News - Thursday 24 July 1902 page 5]
