TABERNACLE PRESBYTERIAN CHAPEL, HAY. — This new chapel was opened during last month. It is partly built on the foundations of the old chapel, and portions of the walls have been retained. The chapel measures 41 feet by 30 feet, and has accommodation for nearly 260. The style adopted is Early English. The walls are of local stone, the front being square random, with dressings of Grinshill and Ruabon stone. The front has one large triple-light window, and one single, with plated tracery in the heads. At the south-east angle is a tower, the doorway having deep jambs and sunk heads. Above are tall belfry lights, and a cornice at the height of 40 feet, with a framed and slated spire 20 feet high. The ceiling is waggon-headed, all principal ribs being exposed and varnished, and the pews are constructed of pitch pine, open. The windows are glazed, with rolled cathedral coloured borders, and the tracery has geometrical patterns in colours. The total cost was only about 7001. The contractor was Mr. James Webb, of Hay. The architect was Mr. Richard Owen, 2 Breck Road, Liverpool. [The Architect 8 March 1873 page 131]
