The CATHOLIC COLLEGE, Winckley Square, Preston which has superseded the old Grammar School, is a commodious building erected in 1899, from a design by Mr. R. B. Mather, of Blackpool, with large additions in 1905, designed by Mr. James Mangan, of Preston.

NEW ROMAN CATHOLIC GRAMMAR SCHOOL - The very early future will, we are given to understand, see the completion of the new Grammar School in Winckley Square, Preston, in connection with St Wilfrid's Roman Catholic Church, and in this instance again will be added still another to Preston's substantial and striking public buildings. When finished, there is no doubt that the new Grammar School will be an ornament even in Winckley Square. The main block is 63 feet by 61 feet, and it contains five classrooms below with a lecture hall and two classrooms above. The main entrance is in Winkley Square and here thew is a handsome vestibule and classrooms on the first and second floors together with cloakrooms and lavatories. Access to the school is gained through a corridor and abutting are the headmaster's and other offices. The main block of buildingsis constructed of Accrington patent facing bricks with red freestone dressings. The outer structure in Winkley Square is of Yorkshire stone and the ornamental carving of the façade, when completed, will be exceptionally handsome. On the dormer gable is a panel bearing the Preston borough arms and above that is a semicircular pediment on which vis carved the arms of St Winifred's presbytery. On each side of the arch above the principal doorway is a shield ribboned and raised on an ornamental panel. The architect is Mr R. B. Mather of Blackpool and Mr T. Cottom, Fylde Road, Preston, the contractor. The school was opened on Monday, but it will be some time before the outer building is absolutely complete.  [Preston Herald 21 January 1899 page 6]
