New Build

Dunkerley built this house in 1923 for himself and named it after a bend in the River Bollin which ran past the bottom of the six and a half acre garden. Although of a substantial size (five bedrooms and ample servants' quarters), the style is undramatic, and Dunkerley is reported as saying his aim was to design a building which would "fit quietly into the scene". It was featured in a 1929 edition of Country Life which described it as a modern adaptation of the old Cheshire farm, adding “the house is marked by sturdiness and the absence of anything trivial”. Pevsner commented “It looks more like 1913, ie Hampstead Garden Suburb in style".  After the death of his wife Annie in 1941, Dunkerley continued to live here until his own death ten years later. His son and family then took over the house and remained until the late 1960s. The house still retains its period detail and was used as a film location for the first series of the television detective programme "Poirot". [RF]
