SAILORS HOME FOR MANCHESTER - Today we give an illustration of the design of the building which has been approved and is the work of Messrs R B Preston ARIBA and Robert Martin LRIBA, architects of Manchester. The building is to be erected in Trafford Road in the neighbourhood of the docks. The frontage will be of red pressed bricks and grey terra cotta. On the ground floor there will be an imposing vestibule and entrance hall, spacious billiards room, restaurant with canteen, lounge-hall with principal staircase leading therefrom, reading and recreation rooms and an assembly hall with platform and the requisite retiring and cloak rooms. On the first floor there will be two large dormitories containing fifty cabins, officers’ quarters consisting of reading and day room with mess room and seven bedrooms. On the second floor there will be similar dormitory accommodation for fifty cabins, board room etc., with residential flat for the superintendent and his family. In the basement there will be accommodation for the kitchen, scullery, pantry, laundry, drying rooms, fuel and boiler house, kitchen stores and locker rooms for the storage of seamen’s kit etc. Accommodation will also be provided for the women staff with bathrooms, lavatories etc. In connection with the officers and men’s dormitories there will be ample bath and lavatory accommodation with storerooms for linen etc.  On the third floor of the building there will be two large dormitories, and an important innovation to Manchester will be a Nautical School for the training of youths intending to become officers in the merchant service. The school with its various classrooms and appliances will be housed on the third floor. [Manchester Weekly Times - continuation 1 February Page 2? CHECK]
