OPENING OF THE NEW HALL OF RESIDENCE. The new wing of the of Residence for women students of Manchester University at The Oaks, Fallowfield, was opened by Miss Penrose, Principal of Somerville College, Oxford, on Saturday afternoon. The Hall was founded in 1899, at the suggestion of Mrs. James Worthington, to provide residence for students of the University who would otherwise have to live in lodgings. The first Hall at Ashburne House, Victoria Park. This was enlarged in 1902 so as to accommodate thirty students. The demand for admission steadily grew, until it was found to make considerable further permanent provision, and by the kindness Of the Council of the University It was made possible to lease The Oaks on the Behrens estate. The two houses were then carried on as a single institution. Owing to the inconvenience of this arrangement; and the necessity of providing still further accommodation the Council decided to give up Ashburne House and to build a new wing at The Oaks. With this addition, The Oaks can now accommodate 62 students, against 47 accommodated in the original building and at Ashburne House. The cost of the new wing is about £11,500. Mr P S Worthington designed the plan of the new wing which was opened on Saturday. [Manchester Guardian 24 October 1910 page 14]
