The Theatre Royal, Horsedge Street, erected in 1879, at a cost of £8,000, on the site of the Working Men’s Hall, destroyed by fire, 6 April, 1878, is a building in the Italian style, from designs by Mr. W. H. Cooke, architect, Oldham; easy exit is provided in cases of emergency, the staircases being fire-proof, of good width and in short flights.

A NEW THEATRE FOR OLDHAM - On Monday afternoon the foundation stone of a new theatre, to be called the Theatre Royal, was laid at Oldham by Mr. J. F. Hargreaves, the chairman of the board of directors of the Working Men's Association. The building is being erected on the site of the old one recently destroyed by fire.  From plans prepared by the architect, Mr. W. H. Cooke, Queen Street, Oldham, the structure promises to be a very fine one. When complete it will cost about £10,000 and will be arranged to seat about 3,000 people.
