The Villa, Hankelow, Cheshire
HOUSE FOR MR. HILTON GREAVES - This house, which is in part an addition (the dining and drawing rooms and rooms over being old), is situated on rising ground, and commands on the garden or north side very extensive views of the country between Crewe and Chester, with the Peckforton Hills and Beeston Castle showing in the distance. The work has been executed in stone and stock bricks for the ground floor, and red deal framing with brick filling-in and backing above, the panels being finished in cement. The roofs are covered with Ruabon tiles. The hall, fireplace screens, ceiling, and dado, and the whole of the staircase have been finished in oak. The vestibule has a stone and marble dado and oak panelling, with cove and ceiling of the latter material. The whole of the work has been carried out by Messrs. Squire, Ashton, and Sons, of Oldham, under the superintendence of the architects, Messrs. Tate and Popplewell, of 87, Mosley-street, Manchester. [Building News 6 March 1885 page 385]
