POYNTON - The parish church of Poynton is now to have its tower and spire, and a contract has just been entered into between Messrs. Ellis & Hinchliffe, the masons and contractors, and Lord Vernon, the steeple being erected as a memorial to the late Baron. The design is by Messrs. Medland & Henry Taylor, architects, Manchester, and the work is now going on under their superintendence. [Builder 12 April 1884 page 529]

On Thursday the top stone of the spire of Poynton Church (which is 134 feet high) was put in its place by the vicar, Rev Andrew E Philmore Gray, who laid the first stone of the new building on 23 May. The necessary funds (£1,575) were collected before the commencement of the work. The architects are Messrs H and M Taylor, of Manchester and the contractors Messrs Ellis and Hinchcliffe, also of this city. [Manchester Guardian 14 February 1885 page 8]
