In 1873 Samuel Hunt, an accountant, decided to erect two warehouses in Portland Street for the purpose of the Manchester trade. He employed as architect Mr Littlewood of Mangnall and Littlewood, who prepared drawings and quantities for the buildings and these were issued to various builders for tender purposes. Joseph Thompson was successful and on 23 June 1873 a contract was drawn up and signed. During construction a dispute arose concerning the inclusion of machinery for a hoist. This was finally resolved in the Nisi Prius Court in 1876.
