NEW PRESBYTERIAN (UNITARIAN) CHAPEL DUKINFIELD – The ceremony of laying the corner stone of the new Presbyterian chapel about to be erected a Dukinfield took place on Wednesday last. The building is to be erected on the site of the old chapel; the inadequate size and dilapidated condition of which rendered a new building absolutely necessary. …… The style of architecture which has been adopted for the new chapel is that which prevailed in the fourteenth century. The plan is cruciform with a lofty nave and transepts lighted by clerestory windows, the nave and aisles being lighted by lancet windows. The extreme length of the building will be 94 feet; across the nave, 50 feet; and across the transepts, 61 feet. The chapel will contain sittings for 977 persons, 191 of the sittings being free; and it is expected to be completed by the latter part of next year, [Manchester Guardian 29 June 1839 page 2]
