URMSTON BRITISH HIGHER GRADE SCHOOLS - The population of Urmston, Flixton, and the neighbourhood having within the past two years rapidly increased, the managers of the British Schools have undertaken to provide additional school accommodation. A new building is about to be erected in Ross Street Urmston, adjoining the present schools in Flixton Road. The new building, which has been designed by Mr F Popplewell, architect of this city, will afford accommodation for about 450 additional children, together with suitable rooms for technical and higher education. A laboratory for practical chemistry with lecture rooms will occupy the ground floor, and on the first floor there will be rooms for art classes. Accommodation will also be provided for the teaching of practical cookery to the girls and a room for instruction in music. In addition to using the new premises for day school purposes, it is intended by the managers to establish evening science and art classes. [Manchester Guardian 18 April 1888 page 5].

URMSTON BRITISH SCHOOLS – A public meeting was held last week in the large room of the new Science and Art Schools in Ross Street Urmston for the purpose of inaugurating the opening of the new building, just completed. The schools have been erected by the managers of the Urmston British Schools from designs prepared by their architect, Mr Frank Popplewell of this city. Additional accommodation is provided for 450 scholars, together with rooms arranged for instruction of a higher character than is generally afforded by public elementary schools. The internal arrangements of the schools are very good. Easy access is obtained to all parts of the building by two capital staircases leading directly from the main entrance hall, which is wide and lofty, and the whole school is thoroughly heated and ventilated.
