Created around 1882 by Ivor Bertie Guest, 1st Baron Wimborne, of Canford Magna, Dorset, the Three Fountains Estate, which owes its name to its proximity to springs, extended over two-hectares, the largest park in the city centre. The monumental "Old English" style villa designed by architects Wornum and Salomons, is the result of a compromise between Basque and English architecture.

Sold around 1889 to the British parliamentarian Sir Andrew Fairbairn, the estate of the Three Fountains then welcomed the crowned heads and aristocrats of Europe: Oscar II of Sweden, Nathalie of Serbia, the wife of William II of Prussia. After the purchase in 1903 of the Three Fountains by the senator and ambassador, Count de la Vinaza, Grand of Spain, succeeded in their turn the apostolic nuncio, the Queen of Portugal, the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII
