The memorial takes the form of an obelisk 90 feet high containing about 7,000 cubic feet of stone. Alternative tenders were sought for both Darley Dale Stone and Cornish Grey Granite. The war memorial was erected on Princes Parade, alongside North Pier. It is a granite obelisk with large rectangular, figurative relief, panels depicting “1914 - War/Justice” and “1918 -'Peace”' by figurative compositions with central allegorical females flanked by servicemen, women and children. The memorial was dedicated, and unveiled by Brigadier General T E Topping, on 10th November 1923.
