On the western bank of Coniston Lake a large hotel was erected in 1849, by J. G. Marshall, Esq., from a design furnished by Mr. Thompson, of Kendal, architect. [History & Directory of Westmorland, 1851 page 448]
Replaced the old Waterhead Inn at the junction of the road to Hawkshead and the road round the lake. In its early days it was also known as New Inn and Waterhead Inn.
