NEW WESLEYAN CHAPEL FOR ROSEGROVE. MEMORIAL STONE LAYING - Owing to their inadequate premises, it was decided soma time ago to erect a chapel in addition to the present school-chapel. The latter structure was erected in 1870, and up to recently had served its purpose. On two occasions it has been enlarged by adding class-rooms. The cost of the new chapel is estimated at £3,000, and the building occupies a prominent corner site in Gannow-lane and White-street. The present school-chapel is connected at the rear of the new premises, the whole forming a commodious suite of buildings. The church consists of nave, and minister's and choir vestries. The galleries are arranged around three sides, with organ loft and choir gallery at the back. The entrances are wide, and will contain staircases and glazed screens. The walls externally are finished with Yorkshire parpoints, red sand stone dressings being freely used. Lead lights, rich and harmonious in colour and treatment, are to be used for glazing. The roof is to be supported by pitch-pine trusses and on the hammer beam the principals will carried by ornamental cast iron columns. The internal woodwork will be pitch-pine. The rostrum and communion are also in pitch-pine. The heating is to be carried out on the low pressure hot water system. The lighting throughout is be by gas. The aim, which been successfully attained, was to give distinctive ecclesiastical character to the building, without in any instance obstructing the view of the rostrum. The ventilation will be on the latest principle. The architect Mr. John B Thornley, Darwen, and the builders are Messrs Pickup and Bell, Burnley. The church will accommodate 549, and when completed will rank among the finest architectural features of the district.
