NEW WESLEYAN CHAPEL FOR LONGSIGHT. The memorial stones of a new Wesleyan Chapel at Longsight were laid Saturday afternoon. The site of the new chapel is plot of freehold land with frontage to the Stockport-road, situate near to the turnpike gate at Longsight. This land was purchased of Mr. George Cooper by the trustees of the chapel. The new chapel, which has been designed by Mr. G. Woodhouse, architect, of Bolton, is of the Gothic style of the early decorated period, and will be a handsome as well as most commodious building. It will contain sittings for over 1,200 persons, of which 300 sittings will be free. There is to be central vestibule, with galleries on each side; and in the front are two transepts and a chancel, the latter forming large vestry, with organ loft and sittings for the choir. The entire length of the building is to be 108 ft., its greatest width 76 ft. Internally, the nave will be 87 ft. long and 44 ft. wide; and each transept will be 24 ft. 6 in. by 14 feet. There will be a turret and spire, together of the height of 112 ft, over the principal entrance. The window, will be numerous and elegant. The walls will be faced with stone, which, together with the decorations, will be from the Yorkshire quarries. The height of the nave will be 26 feet from the floor to the spring of the roof, and 40 feet 6 inches to the turret portion of the ceiling. The remaining portion of the roof will be open-timbered. The contract of Mr. Joseph Robinson, jun., builder, Hyde, has been accepted, the cost of the building to be between £5,000 and £6,000. Manchester Courier 27 April 1867 page 10]
