NEW WESLEYAN SCHOOLS, BOLTON - The memorial-stone of these new schools, situated in Halliwell Road, has just been laid. The style of architecture is Gothic, and will correspond with the adjoining chapel, the walls being built of patent or pressed brick, with Yorkshire stone dressings. The arrangement consists of a lofty schoolroom on the ground floor 102 feet by 32 feet, comprising infants' school, four class-rooms, and a sewing- room. On the upper floor are two large class-rooms, also mixed infants’ school. The heating chamber is in the basement under one of the class-rooms, and arrangements are made in the entrances for cloaks, 8:0. Separate play-grounds are provided for boys and girls. The schools will accommodate 600 day, and 750 Sunday scholars. The large room is so arranged that it may be worked as a mixed school. The designs are by Mr. George Woodhouse, architect, Bolton, and the contractor is Mr. Joseph Marsden. The total cost will be about £2,800. It is proposed to enlarge the. chapel, which at present accommodates 600 people, to provide room for an additional 500. [The Architect 26 April 1873 page 227]
