Multi-gabled with half-timbered first floor and red tiled roof. An attractive and well proportioned residence, large and with extensive attics. Built of red stock bricks with Yorkshire stone heads, sills and mullions. The upper storeys were constructed on timber framing, cemented between, and the roof covered in red tiles. The internal finishings, including the chimney pieces, were in oak. while the upper lights of the reception room windows were filled with richly‑stained glass.  The ground floor of the house had a massive kitchen and a scullery almost as big as well as a butler's pantry, a cook's pantry, store and a china closet to provide service to the great drawing room, dining‑room, library and the hall which was shielded from the entrance lobby.  Richard Ogle, iron merchant, lived in the house with only his wife and a daughter, but had seven servants.

RESIDENCE AT BOWDON - WOODEND has been erected for R. Ogle, Esq., in Dunham Park, Bowdon, and is surrounded by well-grown timber. The land falls away to the north- west, and a most extensive view is obtained from the terrace. The materials used in the construction of the house are red stock bricks, with Yorkshire stone heads, sills, and mullions. The upper stories are constructed on timber framing, cemented between, and the roof is covered with red tiles. The internal finishings are, including the chimneypieces, in oak. The upper squares of reception-room windows are filled in with richly-stained glass. The ceilings are panelled with moulded ribs. Mr. Edward Hughes, of Bootle, near Liverpool, has carried out the work in a most satisfactory manner. [British Architect 20 December 1878 Page 242]
