New build

Denton Lads’ Club was established in 1890, meeting in modest rooms adapted from three cottages. Such was its popularity, that the club soon required additional accommodation and a new building, built at the expense of Mrs Russell Scott and to the designs of J W Beaumont, was opened by W Mather MP on the afternoon of Saturday 4 November 1893.

A new working lads’ club at Denton, near Manchester, built from designs by Mr J W Beaumont was opened on Saturday. It is in the Half-timbered Cheshire style and is constructed of brick and terra cotta, the upper story being of framed timber fitted with plaster panels, whilst the roof is of red tiles.[Building News 10 November 1893 Page 611]

The club consists of four large class-rooms together with the secretary’s office on the ground floor, and a large reading room and two games rooms on the upper floor. The kitchen and rooms connected with it are in the basement. Attached to the club-house is a gymnasium about 65 feet long by 45 feet in width, roofed with plain iron, and provided with two large and three small dressing rooms, with lavatories and baths. The building is in the Cheshire timbered style. Up to the first storey the structure is of brick and terra-cotta, the upper storey being of framed timber filled in with plaster panels, while the roof is of red tile. The club and gymnasium are fitted up with the electric light.[Manchester Guardian 6 November 1893 page 7]
