BASE

Three red strokes in a circle has a plan of the same general type, but which could clearly be improved into a most excellent one with a little more time for reflection on details. The elevations are in a chaste phase of the thirteenth century Gothic which we scarcely hope to often see again. This building externally would be an ornament to any town. If there is anything to criticise it is the double storied tower, which is capable of a good deal of improvement. [The British Architect 5 July 1878 page 3]
