THE RESIDENCE OF ZIBA A. WARD, ESQ, NORTHENDEN - The above house, now approaching completion, is built of the best red brick, with stone dressings. Timber work is introduced in the gables and bays as shown in view, with plaster coves and filling. The roofs are covered with dark brown tiles. The house is raised upon a terrace, bounded by a ramped wall, as shown on block plan, a fountain being constructed at the S.W. angle. Internally the reception rooms, hall, staircase, &c., are finished in oak, the floors being of the same material. Pawled dados are carried round the walls, and the chimney-pieces are of carved oak, and the fire- places lined with tiles, with loose dog grates. The staircase is enriched with brass mountings, and the ceilings divided into shaped panels by delicately mounted ribs in plaster. The windows are filled with leaded glass in small panes, the upper parts having ornamental and tinted glass. Stables and conservatories, hot-houses, etc., are building in the rear, as shown in block plan. Mr Herd, of Manchester, is the principal contractor, the oak chimney-pieces, carving, etc., being executed by Mr Faulkner Armytage, of Altrincham. The whole of the works are being carried out from the designs of the architects, Messrs Asahel P. Bell and Geo. Freeth Roper. [Building News 24 November 1876 page 520]
