Alfred Edward Johnston McCutcheon, otherwise Alfred Edward, was born in Co Down Ireland in 1876. He had moved to Manchester by 1901, resident in Moss Side and employed as a joiner. By 1911 he was acting as clerk of works. The earliest records of A E McCutcheon, architect and civil engineer, date from 1928, when he was in his early fifties. For the most part his known commissions were small scale residential and retail. The exception is his last work, the golf house at Davyhulme Park Golf Club which displays significant knowledge of current Modernist architecture. However, the design was that of a club member, A N Potter.

In 1902 A E McCutcheon married Elizabeth Whatham, the daughter of his landlady. He died on 20 October 1952 at Stretford.
