The son of Thomas Mayor, architect, and Elizabeth, his wife, Charles Kay Mayor was born in Chorlton-on-Medlock in 1868. He was articled to Barker and Ellis (Thomas Groom Barker and George Ellis) 1884-1889 and remained with them as an assistant until 1894 in which year he entered his father’s office. Having attended the Manchester School of Art he passed the RIBA Qualifying Examination in 1895 and was elected Associate of the RIBA on 2 December 1895, proposed by J H Woodhouse, J Holden and P Ogden. His membership lapsed in 1922.

In 1898 Thomas Mayor retired. Charles Kay Mayor joined his brother Thomas in partnership under the style C K and T C Mayor to continue his father’s practice. Following the death of Henry Stelfox, Thomas Mayor’s former partner, C K and T C Mayor completed his unfinished commissions.
