George Speight was born at Bury, the son of Christopher Speight, provisions dealer, and his wife Elizabeth. and practised as an architect, surveyor, and estate agent in the nearby town of Heywood, commencing in 1866. In November 1882 an application for Liquidation by Arrangements under the Bankruptcy Act was made, thereby effectively ending Speights’s architectural career in the town. On 21 September 1883 bankruptcy proceedings concluded when a Final Dividend of a mere 3.5d in the pound was paid out.  Following the bankruptcy, the family moved to Blackpool where George Speight and his sons set up as builders, this enterprise proving considerably more successful. When George Speight died on 11 November 1912 he left personalty of £34,519.
