 Gilbert Ackrowyd Potts was a son of the architect Edward Potts and his wife, Sarah.  He trained as a Quantity Surveyor becoming a Professional Associate Chartered Surveyors Institution (PASI). He appears to have worked for a time in the Bolton office of Potts Son and Hennings with his brother. It is unclear whether he became a partner in the firm of Potts and Hennings
