An architect frequently confused with or merged with his better-known son of the same name, Henry Littler (I) is not included in the Directory of British Architects.  

Based on census records, he was born at Sheffield in 1828 or 1829. Few details have of his early life have emerged but in 1851 he was an architect and clerk of works, and in 1857-1859 he was living in Shropshire where his two eldest children were born. He moved to Manchester in 1860 where he established his architectural practice, although his major clients were all based in the Preston and Fylde areas of Lancashire. In 1886 he was a member of Council, Manchester Society of Architects 1886. Details of his partnership with his son have still to be clarified. No known works ascribed to Henry Littler and Son can be dated to before his death.

Henry Littler (I) died on 26 November 1892 at his residence “Wadenhoe” Cheadle Hulme.
