The church began in 1887 when it was built as the mission church of St Mary's Parish Church in Cheadle to reach the people living in the Councillor Lane side of the village. “A site for a Mission Church at Cheadle Heath has been given by Sir W C Brooks MP and the erection, from the designs of Mr Henry Littler, architect, of this city will be commenced at once.”[Manchester Guardian 12 February 1887 Page 7]
