James Percival
- Birth date 8 December 1877 at Manchester.
- Baptism 7 August 1878 at Manchester.
- Married Florence Eliza
- Death date 25 February 1946 at Hurstdale Bowdon
Born on 8 December 1877, James Percival was the son of Thomas Percival and his first wife Priscilla Anne. Thomas is variously described as a retired cotton spinner (1881) and a retired glass manufacturer (1901). During that period he had amassed sufficient wealth to move his family from Rochdale Road to the wealthy suburb of Brooklands. About 1898 Thomas Percival commissioned William Owen of Manchester to design “Normanhurst” on Brooklands Road and it is possible that James Percival found employment in Owen’s office. No further details of his early career have been found. By 1911 he had commenced practice with offices at 14 St Ann’s Square and he was elected LRIBA in 1912, but appears to have allowed his membership to lapse about 1922. In 1913 he was awarded first premium in an architectural competition for an elementary school in Sale and the following year applied unsuccessfully for the post of architect to the Guardians of the Bucklow Union.
