Son of James Best, brush maker and Welsh-born Mary A Best, John Walsh Best was born in Bolton in 1835 and was articled to an architect by the age of 15. He was in partnership with his brother William from 1859, this being dissolved on 28 January 1863. His bankruptcy application on 17 January 1863 was annulled.  A second bankruptcy application was made on 5 January 1867 from which he was discharge on 14 March 1867.
