Robert Martin was born in 1872, the son of Robert Martin, joiner of Chapman Street Ancoats, and his wife Elizabrth. He trained in the offices of Preston and Vaughan from 1884, eventually becoming chief assistant to R B Preston. After the First World War, Robert Martin joined Richard Bassett Preston in partnership. The partnership ended on Preston’s retirement about 1928, after which he continued to act as Diocesan Surveyor until about 1946. He became LRIBA in 1911 and FRIBA in 1932.
Robert Martin married Emily Hilton. Their son, Sir (John) Leslie Martin (1908–2000), architect, was born at 1 Briardene, Moston Lane, Failsworth, Manchester, on 17 August 1908.
