Another who progressed from builder to architect in his later years, Samuel Drake Davidson was born in Halifax in 1847, the son of Thomas and Sarah Ann. About 1861 the family moved from Halifax to Manchester where Samuel trained as a joiner. By 1881, at the age of 33 he was a builder employing 12 men. Five years later he had taken offices in Hanging Ditch and set up practice as architect and estate agent. His only known commission was Rational Chambers 64 Bridge Street, Manchester.
