Sydney Moss was born in 1882 at Eccles near Manchester, the son of Edward Moss and Susannah. He attended Manchester School of Technology in 1899 and was articled to James William Beaumont from 1901 to 1904, following which he was employed as assistant to Brameld and Smith of Manchester, and to Gilbert Wilson Fraser of Liverpool. He passed the qualifying examination od the RIBA in 1906 and was elected Associate of the RIBA on 3 December 1906, proposed by J W Beaumont, P Ogden, B W P Brameld. In 1907 he won the competition for the Design of Labourers’ Cottages most suitable for Rural Districts in Ireland and by 1909 was in practice on his own account at 4 St Ann’s Square, Manchester. He saw military service in the Royal Engineers during the latter part of World War One, being granted a commission in the Manchester Regiment when the war had all but ended. By 1947 he had moved/retired to Kendal, where he would remain until his death on 1 March 1963.
