William Allen Dew was born in 1874 at Whittington, Derbyshire, the son of Afred and Eliza Dew. His father was a joiner. He received his architectural education at the Hyde Technical School and at the Stockport Technical School where he won first prize for Principles of Ornament and for Design.

His designs won the competition for the Denton Liberal Club and Schools at Hyde. Among his principal works were the Unitarian and Wesleyan churches at Glossop, schools at Hyde; four factories at Hyde; bakeries at Hyde and Ashton; picture Hall Hyde, 1900; Hippodrome Hyde, 1920; child Welfare Centre, Hyde 1923; Houses, Alderley Edge, 1921; Houses, Marple, 1923; Garages at Colwyn Bay Marple and Hyde, 1919; various shops at Manchester and Hyde, 1923, Bank Glossop.
