William Scott was born in Dumfries and worked for Sidney Stott of Oldham before moving to Bolton to join Bradshaw and Gass about 1900. He was primarily a structural engineer and construction manager developing considerable expertise in the design of cotton mills. He became a partner in Bradshaw Gass and Hope in 1920.
