"Ashgrove" Oriel Road, Blackburn Park, for Miss Tattersall

This house was built sometime before 1918, as it was listed in Swarbrick’s FRIBA application of that date. The client was John Brown Tattersall (1845-1925), a Royton cotton mill owner who started as an operative and worked his way up via the trade union to management. He had two daughters – Bertha for whom this house was built and Ann for whom Swarbrick built Yester Lodge (now Castle House) in Bramhall. John Brown Tattersall died at Ashgrove in 1925 and Bertha in 1942.
