In 1840 George Webster built Black Rock Villa, Main Street, Grange, for himself on the recommendation of his doctor, Dr. William Longmire  of  Highgate, Kendal, the intention being that, for health reasons, Webster should have hot and cold brine baths in the basement, taking water directly from the sea. In 1845 Webster produced drawings to protest against the Bill before Parliament for the construction of the railway, which showed how its embankment would cut off his access and views of the sea.
