Cherrytree House, Macclesfield Road, Alderley Edge
A shiny red brick house with some timber framing and tall sculpted chimneys.
The Railtons came to Alderley Edge in 1860 and lived in several houses before commissioning Cherrytree House. Charles Railton wrote a small booklet “The Storey of Alderley Edge and its Parish Church” in which he recalls his youth. His grandson, Reid Railton, was an engineer specialising in the design of high speed cars and boats, which he sometime tested on Swiss Hill. In 1947 Cobb took the world land speed record at 400 mph in a Railton Special, but died in Railton's Crusader while attempting the record for water in 1952. Early in World War II, Cherrytree served as a billet for the fifty soldiers of 'A' Troop, Royal Artillery 960 Coastal Defence Regiment.
